This month New York became the 5th state to pass legislation enabling the creation of 'B Corp's, or Benefit Corporations that can live by values other than solely financial benefit to shareholders.

First post. First book: The Corporation: the pathological pursuit of profit and power by Joel Bakan. Main point: corporations aren't just selfish, they are legally required to be selfish in the supposed interests of their shareholders. Bakan gives extensive and eye-opening examples to prove his point, going back to Henry Ford being sued by his investors for seling cars too cheaply.

Hello out there. I'm a new virtual volunteer with Alonovo, helping a bit with the back end. I'm also reading up on CSR (corporate social responsibility) and related subjects, and will be blogging about it all here.

We are working to finalize data agreements with KLD and some new data vendors. We are hopeful to have agreements in place by mid-July and will be integrating the data shortly thereafter.

B Corporations address two critical problems which hinder the creation of social and environmental impact through business:

* The existence of shareholder primacy which makes it difficult for corporations to take employee, community, and environmental interests into consideration when making decisions; and

Important for all -the application is currently rendering an 'F' for companies when no ratings data is found. We are working on this and expect to have it resolved shortly.
