Get dumb?
2010-07-12
Reviewer: magellan
From all the negative reviews of this movie, you'd think the title was "Get Dumb!" But as a long time fan of the original, I enjoyed it. I thought the movie stayed close enough to the original concept and that the actors were all good enough so that the movie was an overall enjoyable flick.
Ann Hathaway and Steve Carrell aren't quite as wacky as the originals, but then who is? Don Adams had a quality of goofy exaperatedness which is hard to imitate, but Carrell is still good in his own inimitable way. I thought they both did a decent job with their roles. Terrence Stamp, Bill Murray, and Alan Arkin, were all good as I would expect, and The Rock was better than I expected and in some ways stole the show.
The movie reprises many gags from the original, such as the cone of silence, the shoe/radio, the line "Missed it by that much!" and few others, and I thought those came off well too. Overall, I thought this was, although perhaps not great, still a good reprisal of the original show for an old, somewhat persnickety fan of the original series.

Hate Warner Brothers, Love Get Smart

This is a cute movie, but if you bought the Get Smart BluRay hoping to use the digital copy it comes with, you're out of luck. The included digital copy disk expires December 9, 2009. Warner Brothers response to my request for an updated key for the digital copy on my brand new disk was this:
"We have researched your issue and this Digital Copy offer has expired. The Digital Copy offer is for a limited time only. The terms of the offer are specifically stated on the outside packaging. The Digital Copy offer is intended to be available for a limited time for discs purchased near the initial release date."
Bonus points to anyone who can actually find that stated on the packaging. I found it buried in fine print on the digital copy key page inside the case after it was already too late. Guess it's time to make my own DRM free digital copy...

I think the Get Smart DVD was a great purchase. It is a funny video with clean humor that can be viewed by anyone including kids.
